Asian Medicine is a complete medical system that has been practiced in Asian countries for
more than 5,000 years and is well accepted as a mainstream medical practice throughout the region.
Formally introduced in U.S. in 1971, acupuncture has rapidly grown in use and popularity over the
past three decades. According to the 2002 National Health Interview Survey, the largest
and most comprehensive survey of Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) used by
American adults to date, an estimated 8.2 million U.S. adults have tried acupuncture and
an estimated 2.1 million U.S. adults used acupuncture in the previous year.
The theory of Asian Medicineis based on a perception and deep understanding of natural law.The proper physiological function and good health depend on internal balance between Yin (cooling
and nourishing) and Yang (warming and moving) that are co-creative opposites. The attraction
between them creates an energy known as “Qi”, similar to the concept of life force. Qi flows through
all parts of body via 14 major meridians that run along the surface of body and move towards interior
organs. Acupuncture is skillful placement of fine needles at specific locations along these meridians.
In Asian Medicine, disease is thought to result from an excess or deficiency of Qi in some
part of body. Emotional imbalances are believed to play a major role in the development of illness.
In addition, seasonal influences, dietary factors, and physical and sexual activities are also thought to
affect health.
The key philosophy of Asian Medicine is to recognize the interdependence of mind and body and
to restore balance in order to maintain a healthy function of body. Asian Medicine treats the root
cause of illness, not their symptoms. Its holistic approach views every aspect of body, mind, spirit
and emotions as part of a single, complete circle.
Asian Medicine also aims to maintain the individual’s healthy dynamism before diseases or painconditions occur by enhancing immune system and overall well-being. Through a combination of
many modalities, Asian Medicine makes positive change to maintain optimal health and
prevent illness before becoming severe and chronic. It also actively participates in recovery, if a
certian illness should occur.
